Some might say that social media is the main reason why the younger generation is more isolated, with their nose stuck on their screens. But isn’t there another side to this story ?
As part of this generation « addicted » to their mobile I can confirm that, yes, we propably spend way too much time on our phones, most of the time to watch funny videos or memes (not very enlightening I know). But don’t worry it’s not all that bad I believe. Indeed, for me social media is also a way to connect to the world and to the current issues that touches our society.
Without social media, how could solidarity campains like HeForShe or activist movement like Black Lives Matter would have been possible.
Using Social Media for causes like those ones is the 21st century way of protesting, expressing our opinion and making noise to expose the troubles of our society.
The HeForShe campain’s goal is to come to equality between men and women by encouraging men and boys to be a part, take action against negative inequalities faced by women and girls. Wether it was on twitter, instagram or facebook this campaign touched many people, worldwide. Famous actors or singers posted picture of themself with the #HeForShe. Equality between women and men is not there yet but it is thanks to campains like this one that allows young women like me that we are getting closer to this day.
The hashtag #BlackLivesMatter, appeared on social medias in 2013 after the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of African-American teen Trayvon Martin the preceding February. The campain is here to expose the violence and racism African-American have to undergo. The racial profiling, police brutality and racial inequality in the US criminal justice system. Those inequalities brought together many people, and talking about this subject allowed people who might have not known about it to be aware and act on it.
It is clear that some changes need to be done in our society, and social media is a tool we can use to do that. The younger generations unders that. It’s our way to try and reshape the world we live in, to make it a better place for all wether you are a woman a man, regardless of one skin color.
